Now playing

Today, while listening to Mr. Desmond and Kenny Phillips on Wack Radio, a caller asked about a Black Stalin tribute melody recently played on the station. Mr. Desmond mentioned that the melody was done by Nicholas Brancker; he meant The Nicholas Brancker Band! I did my due diligence and located the tribute video. It is the feature for this post, a tribute to the late Dr. Leroy Caliste, on the 24th of July. September 1941 – sunset on 28th. December 2022.

The Black Stalin Tribute by The Nicholas Brancker Band (from Barbados) is a stunning tribute to the legendary Trinidadian calypsonian, Black Stalin. This presentation is a masterpiece of Caribbean music, featuring powerful vocals, intricate instrumentals, and soulful rhythms by the Nicholas Brancker Band. These rhythms transport listeners to the heart of Trinidad's vibrant musical culture from the late Black Stalin. Each track selected for this presentation is expertly crafted. It showcases the incredible talent of the Nicholas Brancker Band and their deep appreciation for Black Stalin's music.

The Black Stalin Tribute is a must-listen for anyone who loves Caribbean music or is interested in exploring Trinidad and Tobago's rich musical traditions. It is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest calypsonians of all time and a testament to his enduring power. Highly recommended.

I have to admit that the singer, Adrian, was excellent and sounded very much like the late maestro, Black Stalin. This feature is pure excellence and one of the finest Black Stalin tributes that I have seen online. Kudos to The Nicholas Brancker Band.

Notes from Nicholas Brancker:
This was the final rehearsal before our first performance after Black Stalin's passing. We had just finished a workshop at UWI for students and decided to document and share this medley with you. This is a tribute to a humble, joyful and committed son of our Caribbean soil. Live on brother!!

But wait, after reading through that paragraph shouldn't you tell people who is the talented artist throwing down the vibe? Well, if you didn't know, you will never forget "Voice"! Yes, he is the Soca Monarch for 2016, 2017, and 2018; he is your International Soca Monarch. This is the other side of the Soca artist. This is the man, the raw, outstanding talent of Aaron 'Voice' St. Louis. Enjoy!

Whatever you are doing now make sure that you have something to drink before you press play to watch the video presentation with this post. This is David Rudder, the video is awesome, the music clean and sounds even better today. This David Rudder at his best, singing all the songs we fell in love with sung by this icon of the soil, sweet Trinidad and Tobago.

David Rudder is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Caribbean music. On July 28, 2018, Rudder performed what he billed as his "final show," titled 7.0, at Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The concert celebrated Rudder's career and contribution to Caribbean music. It was a fitting tribute to a man who had such a profound impact on the region's culture. Those who attended the show will forever be grateful for attending. Those who did not attend or watched it via pay per view will soon be able to view a rebroadcast for a small fee.

As we celebrate David's career, we will forever be thankful for all the memorable music he gave us. In celebration of his legacy and creativity we present D'Music Safe and Sound Episode 7 that features David's awesome music. This feature presentation is so awesome, it will surely bring back nostalgic memories as you shed joy tears. As David would say, "Live yuh life like yuh playing mas, hand in the air and wave for me, time to misbehave".

Sunday is always a special day regardless of where you are in the world. It is a day to relax and reflect. While many folks in the Caribbean attend church for devotions, others travel to the market, return home with their goods, and prepare sumptuous Caribbean delights for their families. Having said that, some of us like to reflect and listen to relaxing music. For that reason, we have chosen a song, a classic song for your listening pleasure. This version, however, is by the Baron; here is "Green Green Grass of Home". May your Sunday be blessed.

Baron's rendition of the timeless classic by Claude "Curly" Putman Jr. and made famous by Tom Jones in 1966, is particularly moving, with his smooth and soulful voice perfectly capturing the emotion and sentiment of the lyrics. The singer has faithfully interpreted the original yet infusing it with his own unique style and infused it with a fresh and contemporary feel, which adds a fresh and contemporary touch to an already classic song.

Today, there are so many radio stations in the Caribbean region today. However, 'back in the day' the music that dominated the airways was not Calypso or Soca (some will say it is the same today). "Green Green Grass of Home", sung by Tom Jones was very popular in Trinidad and Tobago. Baron delivered a version of the song that people loved creating a situation whereby radio stations had to play it. Baron's sweet voice and Caribbean-infused flavor made this song a favorite in Trinidad and Tobago pushing aside Tom Jones as the 'go to' version. Thanks to WACK Radio and Mr. Desmond, Baron's version is still played on the radio today!

Notes from the album titled, "Ballads with a Caribbean Flavor"(allmusic.com)
Living up to the name of the album, these are literally famous pop songs performed by Baron in a Caribbean style. The keyboard-crafted rhythms and melodies bring to mind Kenny G. and Billy Ocean, two musicians who may be a scary comparison to many listeners. But because these songs are recognizable and quite good themselves, this turns out to be a harmless collection that would appeal to anyone who has wanted to hear these songs changed around. As a side note, Tom Jones fans may be interested to know that Jones has covered almost half of this album in his own career, although the comparisons end there.
