Coming Soon to Sokah2Soca + Islandvybe Radio | Haitian Music Mixes

By Published June 16, 2023
Since our formal collaboration with Islandvybe Radio Philadelphia, we realized that the Caribbean has so much diverse music to offer. We, at Sokah2Soca, feature Soca music and all its subgenres from across the region. We have also featured Calypso and Steelband music. Recently we posted our first Kompa Music mixtape; our wish is to provide a weekly or bi-weekly mixtape of Haitian music, not just Kompa but anything related to Haiti, including Meringue, Rara, Twoubadu, Kompas, and other subgenres our Mixmaster DJ J Star chooses to include in any mix session. We will keep the mixes short—about 30-45 minutes long. Keep in mind that the featured DJ is part of the Islandvybe radio family. Yes, Sokah2Soca is also part of the Islandvybe family, and our posts are featured on the Islandvybe website.

So, get ready to immerse yourself in Haitian music. The atmosphere that they produce will astound you. If you love to dance, then the Kompa (Konpa) will put you in that state of mind. Carnival-style music will feature "Rara" vibes. So come and take that musical and cultural journey with us. We are Islandvybe Radio and Sokah2Soca. We provide blog posts, while Islandvybe provides podcasts and music daily.

If you did not get the opportunity to listen to our previous featured mix done by DJ Jeanius here is the link to the post: Moun Sou Moun Konpa Mix by Jeanius.

We are here to fill in the musical gaps, and featuring Haitian music is just the start of good things to come culturally. Keep in mind that French, African, Spanish, and Taino cultures, among others, have all affected the diverse and vibrant kind of music Haitian music produces. Some of the most popular types of Haitian music include:

Meringue Music:

Meringue is traditional Haitian dance music characterized by its upbeat tempo and catchy melodies. It is often played at weddings, festivals, and other celebrations.

Rara Music:

Rara is a type of street music played during Carnival. It is characterized by its use of drums, horns, and other percussion instruments. Rara music celebrates the Haitian Revolution and other relevant historical events.

Twoubadou Music:

Twoubadou is love ballad music popular in Haiti. It is characterized by its slow tempo and romantic lyrics. Twoubadou music is often played at weddings and other special occasions.

Kompas:

Kompas is a type of popular music that originated in Haiti in the 1950s. It is characterized by its fast tempo, catchy melodies, and danceable rhythms. Kompas music is often played in nightclubs, parties, and other social events.

In addition to these traditional genres, hip-hop, rock, and jazz have all influenced Haitian music. Because of this, Haitian music is a vibrant and constantly changing genre of music that captures the country's rich culture and history.
