Kes the Band: NYC Summer Stage 2024 Begins

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 8, 2024, "De Girls Dem Darling," aka Kees of Kes the Band, will perform at the New York City Central Park Summer Stage. This is a huge event for fans of the band and artist. This is one day, one event that will bring the vibe of carnival to Central Park on a beautiful summer's day. We are fortunate to live in these times, regardless of any vitriol seeping through society today. Get ready to "Tack Back", shed your burdens, and prepare for a period of love and dance, if just for a few hours.
Kes the Band, an internationally renowned band, presents flavorful Caribbean music rooted in the sweet Soca music of Trinidad and Tobago. The anticipation is high, and the event will surely sell out once the gate opens at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow.
Kes the Band delivers a blend of Caribbean sounds, including Soca, Dancehall, Zouk, and other Caribbean music blends. The atmosphere will be electrifying; individuals are prepared to dance their tails off as soon as the music commences. Those in attendance will have a taste of the Caribbean they left behind to live in the Big Apple. Those who will be hearing Soca music for the first time will be in awe as their bodies randomly and purposefully move to the beat of the Soca drum kit. Go have fun and record the day for posterity.

Trinidad Sounds: 1950's - 1960's | Big Band, Jazz, Latin and Calypso

The music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago span decades. Each period had a unique sound based on world conditions (e.g., World War II, British rule, etc.) and then some. The creative process emerged under colonial rule and shares a mixture of colonial rule and the creative genius of the people of the land. Today we present a gem of a recording found on SoundCloud by "A Man Called Warick." The music captures the essence of that early period and life in the Caribbean.
Of course, you love Calypso and Steelband music, but this recording sheds light on the various influences and styles that the music encompassed. The recording encapsulates the essence of the people who lived during the period from 1050 to 1960. Take a little time out of your busy schedule to listen to the music and think about the people and time that was. This is the period in which your grandparents and great-grandparents lived. After listening to the music, you will have a greater appreciation for the music of the past and a better understanding of our current musical escapades. Enjoy!

Below the Surface by Mystic Prowler: Calypso Classic

The Golden Age of Calypso, the formative years (1934–1950), brought about change in Calypso and produced some fabulous calypsos that are unmatched today. Now we turn to our present-day crop of Calypsonians, and it feels like they have lost focus and lost their way. They (today's Calypsonians) can't seem to find their way and prefer to complain rather than resolve the issues that are hampering the art form, so we look to the past to find a way forward.
We are in a place where Calypso seems to be looking for a way to be relevant once again, and for that reason, we can look back and reflect on a song that could add some guidance for the rocky road ahead. Now we can reflect and find meaning in a song that won the 1998 Calypso Monarch Title. There is a serious message in the music. This is the Mystic Prowler with one of the songs he sang to win the 1998 Calypso Monarch title (aka Calypso King); the song is "Beneath the Surface," penned by Gregory "GB" Ballantyne.
Those who are stuck in quicksand and can't seem to say the way forward will continually moan and complain about the Calypsonian plight, but they could find solace and a way forward if they heed the words of songwriter Gregory Ballantyne with memorable vocals from the late Mystic Prowler: "They had the stuff that great men are made of; it’s the stuff you can miss unless you look beneath the surface."
Many Calypsonians continue to sing political and social commentary, which may or may not hold relevance in today's world. While I acknowledge the importance of these calypsos, they must sing calypsos that inspire the listener to dance if they are to succeed in the realm of Soca music. That was the case before the dawn of Soca, and it can still happen today; let's enjoy some more 'dance calypso music'. Yes, there is a time and place for everything, and today it calls for music and songs (calypsos) that people can dance to once again. The challenge is on; who is going to do it?
Just to be clear, we feature "Beneath the Surface," written by Gregory Ballantyne and sung by the Mystic Prowler, because of the message, which remains, to this day, a classic calypso; it is not an example of a 'dance calypso'. It is a song with a powerful and inspiring message. Enjoy.

Summer has arrived, and today we bring some sunshine straight from Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad & Tobago is known for its Calypso, Steelpan, Soca, Limbo, and much more. This is a special presentation of two songs by Mr. Desmond. On Sokah2Soca, we have a list of Calypso mixes done by Mr. Desmond, along with this sweet Steelband presentation.
The songs are "Oye Cómo Va" and "If I Never See You Again"—they are exceedingly sweet! This was part of the Sunday show on WACK Radio 90.1 FM in 2023.
