After reviewing this talented artist's work, we have to admit that we want more! Those familiar with this artist and his local performances know how talented he is; after all, they have been singing "African Dancer" for over five years! They already know him, but we want him to shake up the Soca industry with his sweet voice. We aim to draw attention to his name, encouraging you, our Soca fans, to explore the artist music catalog (link below) and contribute to the promotion of his name and, most importantly, his music.
If you haven’t heard of Coutain yet, it’s time to tune in! This young, vibrant artist from Sangre Grande, Trinidad, has already made waves with his captivating track “Junction,” produced by the talented Michael “Tano” Montano for Trinidad’s carnival. Today is a special day to remember. I was listening to Mr. Desmond, one of my favorite DJs for Trinidad's retro music, play Lord Melody's 1980s Calypso monster hit "Sugar Jam." That song brought a smile to my face, and I felt compelled to travel back in time to share this musical gem with you. Considering the current state of Calypso music in Trinidad and Tobago, I had to do this post. Why? Simply put, this song is a perfect illustration of the colorful and upbeat calypso dance style that was popular on dance floors decades ago.
Calypsonians today are too focused on political and social commentary songs. While there's nothing wrong with calypsos reporting on current events or criticizing politicians for their misdeeds, overexposure to Soca music, which dominates today's carnival music scene, has been detrimental to the calypso music genre. If you want to restore harmony in your relationship, attend a party and request calypso dance music. This situation's mood will help you rekindle positive memories and reconnect with those timeless vibes. Only calypso music, not Soca, can recognize that sweet spot! I can assure you that people will choose a dance-calypso vibe over a Soca song. Simply put, dance calypso brings catchy melodies, lively percussion, and vocals that make it impossible to just stand by without getting involved.
Lord Melody's captivating melody and voice in this song compelled me to post it. This song captures the vibe and celebrates community life in sweet Trinidad and Tobago. This song, when played at a party, is timeless and just beckons patrons to get on the dancefloor. That's the power of a well-constructed calypso. The music for this masterpiece was arranged by Art DeCoteau whose genius is unrivaled today. Those were the wonderful old days.
Compared to today’s calypso, which often incorporates modern elements like electronic beats and fusion with other genres, the 1980s style had a raw, organic feel. The use of traditional instruments like steel pans, congas, and brass gave the music a rich, textured sound that resonated deeply with listeners. The communal aspect of calypso, where the music was a shared experience at festivals and gatherings, added to its infectious nature.
So, Calypsonians, note what survives and make your own history. Get creative, bring sweet melodies like the great Lord Melody did, and focus on lyrics that hook the audience. As you listen to the song, turn up the volume and let the vibe and rhythms of Sugar Jam remind you of what could still be if our calypsonians were creative and put in the work to create more calypso gems like "Sugar Jam."

Our feature post today brings the culture of Japan and the Caribbean together and in focus. Ann G. (Angella Giustini), a J-Pop singer from Japan who adores Trinidadian culture and frequently visits Trindad to immerse herself in our carnival culture, collaborates with Lyrikal (Devon Martin) as the lead vocalists on this musical release, "Oideyo."
"Oideyo" is Japanese for "Come On." This song, "Oideyo," delves deeper, as the production team of Dj Private Ryan and Jus Now blended the cultures of Japan and Trinidad & Tobago to inspire the Japanese populace to 'come on over to the Caribbean region' to experience and appreciate Caribbean culture. After all, West Indian-style carnivals are becoming increasingly popular in Japan, with their festival/carnival emulating those of Trinidad and Tobago. It is only now that Japanese singers and artists can start producing their own unique Soca music.
Today is a start. On this special music release, LAZAbeam (Keshav Chandradath Singh of Jus Now fame) and DJ Private Ryan feature Ann G and Lyrikal's vocals. “Oideyo” is a high-energy track that seamlessly blends the infectious beats of Soca with traditional Japanese instruments, creating a sound that’s both fresh and familiar. Ann G’s captivating vocals and Lyrikal’s dynamic performance make this song a must-listen.
This song is a joy to listen to. The music production by Jus Now and DJ Private Ryan will surprise many and set a fire for more collaborations with foreign artists. LAZAbeam’s expertise in incorporating Japanese instruments into the Soca framework adds a distinctive touch that sets “Oideyo” apart from other tracks.
