Mighty Duke’s “Woop Wap Man”: A Calypso Classic That Calls Out Bedroom Braggarts

This song is special; it is exceptional; it is hilarious; and most of all, the delivery of the song is what captivated the audience so lucky to be there to take it all in. Kenny and I decided that this is one song that the people have to hear. Those who love humor, excellent storytelling, and sweet music will appreciate this song in its entirety. Calypso music excels at narrating stories with a sharp wit and a rhythm that evokes a desire to dance. Kenny advised, "You have to do a post for this one." I agreed, and when it came to storytelling, Kelvin Pope, better known as Mighty Duke, was a master. His 1964 hit “Woop Wap Man” is a perfect example of his ability to mix humor, social commentary, and infectious melody into one unforgettable tune.
The Mighty Duke: A Calypso Legend
Before we dive into the song, let’s talk about the man behind it. Mighty Duke was a towering figure in the world of calypso, known for his smooth delivery and clever lyrics. He wasn’t just about making people laugh—his songs often tackled serious topics like black consciousness, apartheid, and global politics. However, he also had a talent for satirizing everyday life, a skill he demonstrated in his song "Woop Wap Man." You can find his music catalog on Discogs by clicking this link: Discogs/Kelvin Pope/Mighty Duke
The Song: A Hilarious Reality Check
“Woop Wap Man” is a playful jab at men who love to boast about their prowess in the bedroom, but this song is about a brash Trini who did not give a damn about his partner but only about his personal satisfaction... a "Woop Wap Man!" To put it bluntly, to say it in a crass manner: If you are coming now, you will have to come when I come again!" Don't be a hater; just use your imagination and put meaning to the statement. You are familiar with the type of men who flaunt their status as the ultimate lovers, champions of romance, and undisputed kings of seduction. But Mighty Duke, with his signature wit, flips the script and delivers the truth that many women would happily confirm: these self-proclaimed bedroom champions often fall hilariously short of their hype.
With a catchy rhythm and Duke’s smooth vocals ( his voice was sweet like sugarcane), the song paints a picture of men who talk a big game but fail to deliver when it really matters. However, this man in our story did not give a damn... "Woop wap, and he is over with it!" Duke's playful lyrics emphasize that the bravado doesn't fool women, a classic case of "all bark, no bite."
Why “Woop Wap Man” Still Resonates
Despite the song's 1964 release, its message remains timeless. Duke's humorous interpretation of the age-old concept of men exaggerating their romantic abilities remains relevant today. His ability to blend comedy with sharp social observations is what made him such a beloved calypsonian.
Beyond the humor, “Woop Wap Man” is also a testament to the storytelling power of calypso music. Yes, storytelling was so good that today's songs are like kindergarten material compared to past work of these calypso greats. It’s a genre that thrives on clever wordplay, infectious rhythms, and a deep connection to everyday life. Mighty Duke understood these qualities better than most, and his legacy as a calypso king remains strong.
Final Thoughts
Mighty Duke’s “Woop Wap Man” is more than just a humorous song—it’s a brilliant piece of musical satire that calls out the gap between talk and action. Whether you’re a longtime calypso fan or just discovering the genre, this song is a must-listen. So next time you hear someone bragging a little too much, just remember Mighty Duke’s wise words—and maybe hum a little “Woop Wap” to yourself.

Reliving the Golden Era: Classic Calypso & Steelband Performances Restored for the Digital Age
in
Blog
June 07, 2025

Everyone is a critic, and everyone holds an opinion. For many, the heyday of calypso surpasses the talents of today's calypso bards. The lyrics, music, orchestration, and variety of calypso have faded away over the decades. I've been reflecting on Trinidad and Tobago’s music and culture—especially that golden era of calypso. The rhythms, the lyrics, and the way they captured the people's soul were truly magical. Imagine if we could experience all of that today, enhanced by modern technology. What if we could bring the sights and sounds of the 1970s to life in 4K? Imagine experiencing some of the classic calypso performances, the steelpan resonating through the streets, and feeling the music's pulse in a way that surpasses mere nostalgia... If you had the opportunity to relive those moments, would you?
Of course, back then, we didn’t have that luxury—but Kenny Phillips? He’s been doing incredible work to make sure we get a taste of it now. The cultural revival is happening, and it’s growing every day. What’s really exciting is that the younger generation, the ones who didn’t get to witness calypso’s rise firsthand, can now dive into these digital restorations and experience it in a way that’ll last for as long as we want. It’s like giving new life to something timeless. It's truly remarkable, isn't it?
Your dream has become reality! The WACK Visual Radio YouTube page now features restored and revitalized hidden gems from the TTT archives, thanks to the painstaking efforts of this celebrated music producer and someone I consider a friend and true cultural ambassador of our culture. Once lost to the past, these timeless calypso and steelband performances are now resurrected, polished, and prepared for a whole new generation to enjoy.
Now, every beat, melody, and lyrical declaration is more audible than ever thanks to the miracle of audio restoration. Imagine experiencing the energy of the renowned steel orchestras of the time, Sparrow, Kitchener, and Lord Melody, again, but with the added vibrancy that comes with modern technology. We present the chronicles of past calypso performances, as follows: Ronnie McIntosh, Tigress, Kurt Allen, Mighty Duke, and Gypsy. Without the use of a time machine, this experience is similar to going back in time.
For those who experienced these events, it's an opportunity to revisit past memories. And for newcomers to the genre, this is an opportunity to witness the foundation upon which today’s Caribbean music thrives. These performances are not just entertainment; they are historical artifacts—testaments to the ingenuity and resilience of Trinbagonian culture.
This YouTube music player will be regularly updated by Kenny; we recommend that you frequently check back for all the updates on Sokah2Soca, ensuring that everyone can still enjoy these iconic sounds. The past is calling, and Kenny has given us the means to answer.
Watch, listen, and relive—because the heartbeat of Calypso and Steelpan never fades, it only gets stronger. That legacy will endure for as long as we desire.

On a Serious Note: Do You Really Believe Skiffle Won the 2025 Panorama Finals?
in
Blog
June 07, 2025
The content was first published on the blog Sokah2Soca (www.sokah2soca.com). We bring you only the best new music, while Island Vybe Radio rocks it live on the air!
"They thief, they thief, we want to see the score sheet," and so it goes every year, the cry echoes across pan yards and social media platforms: “They thief meh band!” Today, the pride of South Trinidad Radio and culture warriors radio station, WACK Visual Radio, boldly declared that Skiffle had won the 2025 Panorama competition. Comments in the shout box and from callers support the claim that Kenny Phillips, the radio presenter and WACK head, made. Regrettably, this declaration has turned into a cry of disappointment, a hasty response that frequently stems more from personal allegiances than from the actual judging criteria. They all know better, and Kenny, of all people—a music producer and "culture warrior"—knows better! In the 2025 Large Conventional Steelband competition, the narrative is no different... bush judges proclaimed winners—ahem, all wrong! Some supporters remain adamant—Skiffle was the true champion. But let’s strip away emotions and look at the facts.
One band, Exodus, made a lasting impression on the judges' scorecards from the very beginning of the preliminary rounds. They came in with purpose, delivering performances that consistently impressed the adjudicators at every stage. Yes, every band improved as the competition progressed; that is the very nature of Panorama. Musicians tweak their arrangements, refine execution, and elevate their artistry in response to judges’ critiques. And let’s be clear—that applied to Exodus as well. Hello, did you think they played the same arrangement for each round of competition? Oh, hell no, they tweaked theirs too. They weren’t simply coasting—they were listening, improving, and executing at the highest level.
The final scores revealed close margins, yet Exodus emerged victorious. Damn, it was super close, with Exodus scoring 288 points, second place BP Renegades scoring 285 points and third place going to Skiffle with 283 points. The victory was not a fluke nor a miscalculation. Indeed, the results were consistent, and Exodus earned their position. However, the pervasive tribalism within Panorama resurfaced, with some supporters disregarding the judges' expertise in favor of their instincts.
Given the scoring categories and criteria, I'm unsure where to start! I am certain that someone like Vanessa Headley-Brewster, who hosts the steelpan show on WACK Radio, the current small conventional steelband winner (tied for first with T&TEC New East Side Dimension), and who also judges, knows better! She should have said something about that...
Is Skiffle an excellent band? Absolutely. Did they perform magnificently? Without question. But were they “robbed”? That’s where emotion clouds judgment. Every year, fans passionately defend their favorites, often disregarding the meticulous process that decides the winner. It’s time to recognize the reality—Panorama is about musical excellence, not just fan loyalty. This year, Exodus proved they had the winning formula.
To all the self-proclaimed "bush judges" out there, let’s gain some perspective on the outcome: Talent, discipline, and precision prevailed in 2025. Exodus emerged as the winner, and they earned it. Give it a rest; let go of these aggrieved emotions. Soon, very soon, it will be time again to practice for another chance to really win it all... c'est la vie!
