Wherever West Indian-styled carnivals take place, Soca music, considered the child of Calypso music, is the heart and soul of carnival celebrations. The Caribbean, North America, England, Europe, and even Japan jam to Soca music for their Carnival celebrations. That was not always the case; Calypso was once the driving force for carnival, but that all changed because of the youth's mood and a desire for creative musicians to find "something musically sweeter than Calypso" to lure the young souls away from dancehall music. This happened during the 1970s, when Calypsonian Lord Shorty innovated and created a new style of Calypso, he named Sokah! The printed press began to refer to Sokah as Soca, and this ever-changing style continues to carry the name "Soca."
Today, the term "Soca" serves as a marketing tool, as it encompasses all new Caribbean Carnival music. However, unless one is well-versed in the genre or has been around from the start, it can be challenging to discern the Soca beat in some of these new music releases. For that reason, we present this Facebook interview, done by Ashwin Seegobin, with Mr. Kenny Phillips telling the story of the evolution of Calypso to Sokah (Soca). When it comes to carnival and celebrating during the carnival season, a typical male may find it difficult to distinguish between what they want and need. Today we feature a new music release for Carnival 2025 in Trinidad and Tobago. "Watching It" is the title of the song by Lil' Bits. The singer, who also wrote the song, conceptualized this teaser.
In order for this song to 'take off,' Lil' Bits must heavily promote it on the radio. Social media could be beneficial, but this did not really capture my attention—I am not feeling this vibe. The lyrical content is weak, and the music feels basic. Having said that, there is no doubt that Hit It Records and DJ KY's new music release will undoubtedly energize the artist's fans.
Lil' Bits is a talented performer who will be able to pull off this song while performing on stage, but to be honest, there is nothing special about it. I can't even identify a hook to draw me in. Having said that, imagining the visuals of Lil' Bits teasing on stage can be alluring to the average Soca fan.
Lil' Bits is intent on taking you on a music journey, but will she succeed? Only time will tell, but you can share your thoughts about this song before the deluge of new music debuts for Carnival 2025. Tell us what you think about this song.
